Russian River Utility Manages 5 Sonoma County Service Area Water Systems

The County of Sonoma Board of Supervisors governs the County Service Area Water Systems. The CSA Water Systems are public municipal water systems which are under the water quality and reporting requirements of the Division of Drinking Water. The fiscal budget and water rates are reviewed and approved by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors.

The County of Sonoma Board of Supervisors governs four water systems referred to as Zone of Benefit. These five zones consist of Fitch Mountain, Freestone, Jenner, Salmon Creek and West Water. The water systems are supervised by Sonoma County Public Infrastructure, with billing services provided by Russian River Utility. Operation, maintenance, engineering, management, meter reading and emergency repairs are the responsibility of RRU. Remote radio telemetry system monitors both the Fitch Mountain and Jenner systems, which provide 24-hour alarm reporting systems.

Fitch Mountain Water System

This system serves 339 customers. The water supply is purchased from the City of Healdsburg. This water is pumped into three 100,000-gallon storage tanks for distribution to three pressure zones. A pneumatic pressure system provides water to the highest zone on McDonough Heights Road. Russian River Utility monitors and controls this system with a remote radio telemetry system.

Freestone Water System

This system consists of 26 services. The water supply consists of a surface water spring and three ground water wells. All water is oxidized to remove dissolved iron and filtered in a multimedia pressure filter.

Jenner Water System

This system serves 123 customers. The water supply consists of surface water pumped from Jenner Creek. This raw water is treated in a multimedia gravity filter treatment plant. This plant is monitored by a remote telemetry system which transmits turbidity, disinfectant residual, and tank level to the RRU office in Forestville. Treated and disinfected water is stored in a 100,000-gallon tank. Russian River Utility monitors and controls this system with a remote radio telemetry system.

Salmon Creek Water System

This system serves 99 customers. The water supply consists of two separate sources: a shallow ground water well with an elevated specific conductivity, and a spring galley source under the influence of ground water. Both sources are disinfected with liquid chlorine.

Two booster pumps supply the distribution system and a high volume pump is available for fire flows. A generator is available to insure water delivery in the event of a power failure.

West Water Company

West Water Company county water system is currently being operated by Russian River Utility.
